The Unit is responsible for workplace compliance to ensure that workers are provided with decent working conditions required under the new Employment and Industrial Relations Code (EIRC), 2015. The new Act revises and consolidates the old labour laws namely the Employment Ordinance, Trade Union and Employer Organisation's Act, Industrial Relations Act embedding the Fundamental Principles and Right at Work (FPRW) that gives effect to the ILO core conventions being ratified by Kiribati. This Act gives the mandate to the Ministry to perform Labour Inspection.

Key functions of the Unit includes the following:

  • Secretariat to the Triparite Decent Work Advisory Board which is the advisory body on all labour related matters.
  • Issue 'License to Recruit' and monitor compliance of recruiting agencies.
  • Registration and compliance of Employer Organisations and Trade Unions.
  • Ratification and implementation of relevant ILO conventions.
  • Enforcement of Labour laws through labour inspections.
  • Kiribati reporting obligations on ILO conventions.
  • Handling Trade Disputes.

    Without a notification of visit prior to the visit, NO. If a notification has been sent, it is you duty as an employee or employer to assist the inspectors, if and when needed. Read more HERE.
